These self-portraits are from a series titled Monstruosa (2020-present). Combining digital photography, collage and drawing, the portraits are made using “selfies” and other images I digitally manipulate on my phone or tablet. It comes from a place of curiosity and a willingness to look into the “shadows” of oneself. Combining digital photography, collage and drawing, I look for versions of myself that are not always visible. The portraits are made using “selfies” I digitally manipulate on my phone or tablet. I make them in spontaneous moments when I can not be in the studio. Transforming myself into a zombie, clown, flower pot or blob on a beach felt necessary and liberating. I am continually trying to understand the messy chaos that is the world we live in. In reality, I know that life is not a black or white binary. But it can be hard to sit with those parts of ourselves that don’t always fit neatly into the categories we make. Monstruosa is about looking at the spectrum of feelings and thoughts that make up the gray area.
